Emotion, struggle and resilience: the Niviuk pilots’ journey through the X-Alps

The Red Bull X-Alps 2025 is now part of history — and what a story it’s been! It was the most thrilling and tightly contested edition ever: the top four athletes reached the finish line just minutes apart after covering more than 1,200 km across the Alps. At Niviuk, we want to congratulate the winners for their truly masterful performance.

But we especially want to celebrate our athletes — Tanguy Renaud-Goud, Celine Lorenz, Jean de Biolley and Jared Scheid — who once again proved they are cut from a different cloth. They don’t just compete, they inspire. They gave their all across the Alpine terrain and skies, enduring extreme conditions, critical decisions and brutal physical and mental challenges. And they did it with courage, dedication, and a passion that fills us with pride.

Tanguy Renaud-Goud | FRA4

In just 9 days and 5 hours, Tanguy reached the finish line in Zell am See, securing a spot in the Top 10 and confirming his place among the sport’s elite. His start was flawless: flying with the leading group, making precise moves, and adapting with remarkable ease. He even spent a night bivouacked on the floor of the cable car station at Turnpoint 7, Disentis.

The stretch towards TP10 in Les 2 Alpes was a turning point: he lost positions, but never sight of the goal. Flight after flight, hike after hike, he pushed forward with everything he had.

His final night was one of the most heroic efforts of this edition: Tanguy activated his Night Pass and hiked nearly 80 km in less than 24 hours. That’s nearly two back-to-back marathons — pushing until 3:00 AM with only three hours of sleep before continuing the final push without even stopping to eat. Exhausted but determined, he gave absolutely everything. What a beast!

Celine Lorenz | GER2

The only woman on the start line of this year’s race, Celine experienced one of the toughest and most meaningful moments of the entire competition. She was making good progress until she reached Grimselpass, a section that had already challenged her in the past. There, she landed in a deep valley with a raging river — impossible to cross.

What looked like a wide, safe landing field turned into a six-hour ordeal with no clear way to the other side. Her team even considered calling a rescue helicopter. But Celine didn’t give up. She hiked upstream and eventually found a small stone crossing that allowed her to escape. That day also brought dust storms, wind, physical exhaustion and deep emotional fatigue. Completely overwhelmed, Celine broke down and considered quitting. But then she looked around — at the valley, the flowers, the mountains — and something clicked. She reset, refocused, and kept going.

Throughout the race, she faced fierce weather and harsh terrain — but nothing broke her spirit. She even reached the most remote turnpoint of the course, Les 2 Alpes, where her adventure came to an end after being eliminated.

Jared Scheid | USA

Jared took on the X-Alps in the rawest, most authentic way possible — feeling the mountains, flowing with nature, and supported only by two crew members. He followed his instincts and set his own pace throughout the race.

But don’t let his calm exterior fool you: the weather threw many challenges his way. Storms forced him to stop, reroute, and adapt constantly. At times, he bivouacked directly on launch sites, sleeping with only a mat and thermal blanket.

His breakthrough came mid-race, in what became one of the most strategic moves of the edition. While others kept hiking, Jared waited patiently, knowing early thermals would deliver. He was right. With a perfect take-off and strong climb, he passed the pack and became the first of his group to land at TP14 Lermoos, jumping from 21st to 12th place — a position he held until the finish line. He’s a born adventurer: adaptable, smart, and mountain-ready.

Jean de Biolley | BEL2

Jean’s race was a true odyssey. From the very first day, the X-Alps showed its wildest side: a hailstorm high in the Dolomites forced Jean and several athletes to take shelter in caves and mountain huts, unable to continue until sunrise — when they resumed the via ferrata under cloudy skies.

But that was just the beginning. A few days later, during an evening takeoff in St. Moritz, a sudden gust slammed him into the mountain, just after gaining altitude. The result: a twisted ankle and a visit to the emergency room. It looked like the end — but Jean had other plans. After a short rest at the turnpoint, the race doctor cleared him to continue.

What followed was an inspiring display of determination. Limping, but relentless, Jean kept hiking, flying as efficiently as possible, and making every kilometer count. In one particularly strong day, he flew more than 9 hours, clawing back time and distance. Despite everything, he crossed the finish line — and did so with a smile. His resilience, optimism, and ability to rise when everything seemed lost is pure inspiration.
